Attention Through the Body

Getting to Know

Your Attention Through the Body

Teacher-Guided Activity

Differentiation (Support)

Invite students to keep their eyes open and focus on one body part (like hands or feet) instead of moving through the entire body.

Offer simple prompts such as, “Can you notice one small movement your body makes as you breathe?”

Remind students that it’s okay if they don’t feel specific sensations - just noticing where their attention goes is part of the practice.

Differentiation (Challenge)

Encourage students to notice not only sensations but also how attention itself feels - does it move easily or get distracted?

Ask them to experiment with expanding and narrowing their focus, like zooming a camera lens.

Invite reflection on where their attention tends to go most often during the day.

Extension

Have students write about or draw what “aliveness” in the body feels like to them.

Encourage a short daily practice of noticing one body part for 30 seconds, perhaps during transitions between classes.

Connect this lesson to future mindfulness practices by asking: “What happens when you bring this same kind of attention to your thoughts or emotions?”
